Witchbroom in French

A French-language edition of Witchbroom, the Caribbean classic, by Lawrence Scott, has been published by Mémoire D’Encrier, the French-Canadian publisher. This is a welcome development for Scott’s beguiling and prestigious novel. The French title, Balai de Sorcière, a “literal” translation of the English title, refers, as it does in English, to a disease which attacks plants, such as cocoa, and distorts the structure of the tree. A symptom of the disease is a cluster of brush-like shoots emerging from one point of the tree and forming nest-like structures. The Balai de Sorcière was translated by Christine Pagnoulle, who teaches English literatures and translation at the University of Liège, Belgium.
