“A really accomplished writer. Lawrence Scott’s last book is a delight,” says Nobel prize-winner Derek Walcott of this daring new collection of short stories by the award-winning Trinidadian author Lawrence Scott. And now Leaving by Plane has been long listed for the Edge Hill award (the UK’s only prize for a short story volume by a single author).

These sensuous stories explore a Caribbean world of yearnings and memory, of escape and return underpinned by the disturbing tensions wrought by religion, race, sexuality and crime. One of Scott’s earlier short stories won the Tom-Gallon Award and his novels, which include Light Falling on Bamboo (2012), have been long-listed for both the Whitbread Prize and the Booker Prize.

Scott was born on a sugar estate in Trinidad. He lives both in London and Port of Spain.

The publication of Leaving by Plane Swimming back Underwater consolidates  the expansion of Papillote Press into books that look beyond Dominica – to the wider Caribbean.
